Schatzi's Pub In Poughkeepsie Vies For Perfect Patty In DVlicious Contest

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Any way you flip it, the burger is one of America’s favorite foods. We asked for your top picks in the county; the list has been narrowed to three finalists, each of which is being profiled this week.

The Schatzie Burger, a mile-high masterpiece of beef, pork belly, cheddar and a potato pancake, dripping with its signature braised red cabbage sauce just begs to be devoured at the Poughkeepsie gastropub.

What Makes It Patty Perfect: Surprise! Schatzi’s isn’t just about bratwurst, schnitzel, and sauerbraten. This sweetheart of a German gastropub also builds a whopper of a burger out of eight ounces of ground beef and short rib from New Jersey’s Pat LaFrieda, the legendary purveyor of meats.

The patty is served on a toasted pretzel bun and topped with crispy pork belly, melted cheddar, an addictive braised purple cabbage sauce, AND -- get ready to loosen the braces on your lederhosen a notch or two, meine damen und herren -- a potato pancake.  And if one serving of spuds doesn't suffice, you get fries or German potato salad on the side. (Some Schatzie's fans say skip the fries and get the frickles, aka fried pickles.)

On the opposite end of the cholesterol spectrum is its veggie burger, an 8-ounce black bean patty smothered in avocado, arugula, pickled onions, gruyere cheese, and spicy aioli. Schatzi's, which opened a sister eatery in New Paltz last year, also serves "specials" such as the burger with pepper jack cheese-stuffed meatloaf balanced on top of the beef patty and smothered in caramelized onion gravy.
